Our school is proud to be a Rights Respecting School, which means we put the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) at the heart of our ethos and practice. By learning about our rights, we also learn our responsibilities to respect the rights of others. This approach improves relationships, boosts well-being, and encourages us to be responsible global citizens who advocate for fairness and social justice.
The articles of the Convention are based on the recognition of every child’s basic needs in order to thrive.
The UNCRC therefore sets out a child’s rights to:
- Survive and have good health
- Be protected from harm
- Develop their talents and skills
- Participate in the world to which they belong.
What it means to be a Rights Respecting School
- We understand our rights: We have learned about the 54 articles of the UNCRC, which cover all aspects of a child's life, from the right to education and play to the right to be listened to.
- We respect the rights of others: We are taught that rights are unconditional and that everyone has the right to have their rights respected.
- We have a Class Charter: In each class, pupils and teachers work together to create a 'Class Charter' that sets out our rights and our responsibilities to each other.
- We have a voice: Children are involved in decision-making through groups like our Learning Council Eco Council and Happiness Heroes, and their views are taken seriously in all matters that affect them.
- We are active global citizens: We raise awareness about social justice issues and work to bring about positive change in our school and the wider community.
What it means for our school community
- For pupils: Participation in the Award improves our confidence, well-being, and academic learning.
- For our community: It fosters a more inclusive environment where all children feel valued, leading to better relationships between pupils, staff, and parents.
How you can get involved
- Talk to your child: Ask them about the rights and responsibilities they have been learning about and their Class Charter.
- Engage with school activities: Get involved in rights-related projects and activities that are shared through newsletters or other communications.
- Support our efforts: By engaging with these activities, you can help your child to be a more responsible and active global citizen.
What is the Rights Respecting School Award?
In order to achieve the award the school must meet the required standards across four aspects of school life.
These are:
- Leadership and management which promotes the values of the UNCRC in the life of the school
- Knowledge of the UNCRC including an understanding that with rights comes responsibilities
- Rights-respecting climate and culture in the classroom
- Active pupil participation in decision making.
