Learning in the Foundation Stage (Nursery and Reception)

Whilst children in Reception and Nursery are fully integrated with everything that happens within Key Stage 1 and 2, they do follow a separate curriculum.

The Foundation curriculum offers many opportunities for children to develop through adult led, adult structured and child initiated activities.

The experiences, planned for and explored within the Foundation Stage by the Early Years’ children, are based within seven areas of learning.


Prime Areas of Learning:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical Development
  • Communication and Language

Specific Areas of Learning:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design


Built into these are Early Learning Goals which are not a curriculum in themselves but establish expectations for most children to reach by the close of the Foundation stage.

The curriculum is designed such that transition into Reception from Nursery and Year 1 from Reception, ensures continuity, progression and security.
